When friend opportunities start to turn sour
I retreat to the top of my digital tower
And I watch from above while they live out their lives
While the darkness rolls into my digital skies
As I struggle to keep track of their disguises
I look to myself and I start to despise
All the mountains of loneliness I have acquired
I struggle to be someone that they admire
And I push them away because I don't know how
To balance friendships in the here and the now
With one foot in the future and one in the past
I keep dead friendships locked up behind glass
I lay in the dark with light blasting my face
New data comes in and then it's replaced
And my eyes start to burn as they become dry
But I will never blink because I'm terrified
That I'll miss something that I may not see again
This constant flow never comes to an end
A digital river that never runs dry
I continue to scroll while my life passes by
I push them away because I don't know how
To balance friendships in the here and the now
With one foot in the future and one in the past
I keep my dead friendships locked up behind glass
When I find myself in a struggle for power
I retreat to the top of my digital tower
And I lay in my bed and I stay there for days
No one that knows I'm there, cause no one engages
When I feel like I've reached the threshold of sadness
I find new territory inside of my chest
A tiny pocket where happiness lies
And I watch as it shrinks, and it withers and dies
I push them away because I don't know how
To balance friendships in the here and the now
With one foot in the future and one in the past
I keep my dead friendships locked up behind glass
